i haven't heard from Nicholas in a week... I'm sure he's ok... but I think its darn near time for him to check in! I sent a message to the Boston chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club this week just letting them know that they played an unsuspecting role in a 2013 thru-hikers journey. Nicholas has not said much to me about it but part of his inspiration for this hike has been his cousin Matthew who also lived adventurously in his short life of 29 years and who worked for the Boston AMC. The last time I spoke with Nicholas he said he had gotten the care package i sent to him and that it was "awesome".He also got a package from his dad and The Wood's. Making plans to fly to Harpers Ferry-ish area in early June with Diane Dill, Pat Moore Herrick, and Colt Delaney! Woot Woot! We will spend a fewdays with Nicholas hiking with him and pampering him.

Nicholas checked in with me this afternoon. He was feeling kind of low. He had two twenty plus mile days and yesterday his feet got wet and has some bad blisters. I told him to get some epsom salts and hot water and have a good foot soak - and not to break the blisters. He picked up the package I sent him at the Post Office in Hot Springs, NC and e said it was awesome.. I hope he takes the time to take care of his feet and recharge his spirits before going on.

Admiral Peary Has Checked In
Nicholas and seven companions are hunkered down in an AT Shelter 6000 feet above Gatlinburg, TN area. There is a foot of snow on the ground and he said that it was expected to snow for another 24 hours (though the weather report below says ending tonight). They have not yet started a fire but all are happy and healthy. Nicholas led the way through the ice and snow yesterday and his group started calling him Admiral Peary. He enlightened them about his home town ties to Adm. Peary (Eagle Island and Bowdoin College Museum). (i'm not at all worried - i'm not at all worried - ok - 90% (80??) not worried...) It was super cool to be able to talk to him in the midst of his adventure!
